In the age of reality TV, almost anyone can become an immediate nationwide sensation — even a physician.

These days, dermatologist Sandra Lee, also known as Dr. Pimple Popper, is finding herself in the limelight, and some local doctors have taken notice.

Lee is a physician and cosmetic surgeon in Upland, California. She has scores of followers — and wince-inducing videos — on YouTube and her own show on cable TV channel TLC.

She drains boils, excises epidermoid cysts and squeezes lipomas (fatty deposits) out of the body through small incisions — mesmerizing some but ratcheting up the “eww” factor for others.

Some central Ohio dermatologists said they see Lee’s relative popularity — gained initially through social media — as mostly positive, shining a white-hot spotlight on the importance of healthy skin and a vital, if misunderstood, medical subspecialty.
